Clove oil as a natural remedy, or Ambusol if you do not care whether or not it is a natural cure. You just have to put a drop where the pain is.

If you have lost a filling, there is a temporary filling you can buy over the counter as well.

Reply:I think the only solution to be able to stop it permanently on your own would be to pull it out. I'm sure that wouldn't be first on your list, especially if it is a molar!! I think it would be best to go to the dentist. That way you will get it fixed permanently.

Reply:For years I tried to do this. It is futile. I used so much motrin I am now allergic to it. Do not try this on your own but find a dentist to help you. You might be able to stop the pain for a short time but it will just come back because you didn't deal with the problem.

Do not drink any extremely hot or extremely cold drinks because that will irritate the nerves in the bad tooth. I know that you must eat but try to chew your food away from the sore tooth. That might not be an ache as much as it might be a sensitivity. Sensadyne tooth paste might help. But go to dentist and let him do x-rays and then tell you.

It is really going to depend on what is wrong with your tooth. If it is decay, there are some over the counter medicines at your local pharmacy that will help. If the tooth is cracked, there isn't much you can do until you get to the dentist. If it is infected, you will need antibiotics. Basically, the only thing you can do is relieve some of the pain with over the counter medicines. It will take a dentist to completely fix the problem.

Antibiotics. Teeth have pressure receptors, not pain receptores. So, pain killers do not provide much relief. The pain will not quit/weaken much until the pressure from the infection around the root tip of your tooth gets smaller making it apply less pressure/less pain. Thus, you need some antibiotics to help relieve the infection.

Had a root canal on my upper #4 pre-molar tooth ten days ago. Tooth is not sensitve to hot or cold, but has had a dull ache ever since. Pretty constant ache, minor though. Endo gave me some penicillan 4 days ago and there has been no change. Any advice?

Reply:Go back to your dentist. The only time I had pain after a root canal was when the jerk who did it perforated the root. The feeling was that of a dull throbbing. I had developed an infection because of the perforation. Bottom line.......I lost the freaking tooth. The Endo prescribed antibiotic and is keeping his fingers crossed.

Reply:This sounds like Wisdom teeth growth. You need to get wisdom teeth extracted by dentist --- they are EXTREMELY PAINFUL. I'm sorry to hear this. I had mine removed at age 22.

Reply:You NEED to see a dentist, at least get a diagnosis for the pain. You may have an infection. Try icing it down for awhile, maybe change your prescription, try something stronger like naproxen 500mg 1 every 6 hours or even stronger is ketorolac 10mg 1 every 8 hours, for 7 days. Take these pain killers longer than you should and you might get something like a liver disease, painkillers are only temporary. Remember that.

Try locating a dental school nearby, they'll always help you and are a lot cheaper.

Call a RX and ask what the maxium amount of the pain killer you are using you can take to get relief. Always check with a Rx they can tell you and it is free.
Reply:This sounds like it is infected, if so use warm salt water and rinse. Also if you can find pure clove oil with help numb it up. The salt water rinse you can do several times a day. Don't swallow any. Just rinse it out. Then try ibuprfen for pain.

Reply:A temporary fix is clove oil. the drugstore should have it dulls the pain and is an antiseptic. orajell will dull the pain. it is used for teething babies. (the active ingtrdient is xylocain hysrochloride. The stuff dentists use to freeze gums. But get to a dentist on Monday and get the tooth fixed.

Your tooth may be abscessing and you should really see a dentist. If there is enough pressure or trouble in the area in which there is a nerve ending (and there are plenty of nerves in there) you may experience numbness in your cheek or lips. If you are having trouble with your teeth and it is creating numbness in your face, you definitely need to see a dentist. This is not a normal reaction to a toothache. If your tooth is abscessing (infected) then you must have it addressed or removed. You can get yourself into serious trouble if this is left unaddressed. Tap gently, on the tooth that is giving you trouble (use the end of a fork or spoon). If that "tap" sends you "thru-the-roof" then you need to see a dentist right away, you have an infection (an abscess). These types of things do not clear up on their own. Best of luck! Get help and you will feel with your lip again and feel much better!

1. You might get some relief from toothache drops or cloves if you are having hot/cold pain. If you have an abscess (deep dull ache), then antibiotics might help.

2. Paracetamol (Tylenol in the US) is fine, as long as you follow the dosages.

3. You may also have some paracetamol with codeine.

4. IF YOU'RE NOT IN YOUR LAST TRIMESTER, then you can also take some ibuprofen. This is usually the most effective form of toothache relief.

***PLEASE ASK YOUR PHARMACIST, and see a dentist as soon as practicable. There is absolutely NO reason why you can't receive dental work when pregnant. Find a decent dentist who is happy to see you, and doesn't say such nonsense.

There is NO RISK to the bub, even Xrays. You are at more risk to yourself and bub by continuing to have unecessary painkillers than seeking dental treatment.

Aleve, Motrin or Advil at a 600mg dose, are all good anti inflammatory to take for dental problems. Although if your tooth has abscessed these will offer little relief. If you have swelling, drainage or throbbing symptoms, it may be advisable for you to contact your dentist this weekend. He may phone in a prescription for antibiotics and pain med's so you won't suffer all weekend and so treatment can begin early next week.

To remove the cause, you need to either pull the tooth yourself or get professional help.

For temporary relief, take willow bark tea (bad for the stomach), apply OraJel, brush with Sensodyne toothpaste, chew willow twigs, or take aspirin (derived originally from willow bark). Some people apply whiskey or drink copious amounts.

If you have a swollen place on your gum near the painful tooth, you really should get medical help as abcesses can be very dangerous if not treated properly. Reply:I say this with concern: PLEASE GO TO THE DENTIST! You may need to be on antibiotics if you have an abecessed tooth. You can use Anbesol by putting it on a q-tip and leaving this on the offensive tooth. Also, you can take up to 800 mg of Ibuprophen every 6 hours to alleviate some of the pain. It has been my experience when you have a toothache, it is hard to concentrate on anything else. The reason I say you may need an antibiotic is because if you are forming an abcess, this needs to be treated with oral antibiotics, therefore, going to the Dentist is the logical thing to do. Reply:Someone replied clove oil and ibuprophen, and something like that is probably the only way, but you'll eventually have to go to a dentist -- and the sooner the better.

Oil of clove is a topical anesthetic you can put directly on the tooth -- usually gives some relief. The pharmacist will have it or a brand name that contains it. Ibuprophen (e.g. brand-name Advil) is my pain-reliever of choice for headaches, either that or acetomenaphin (e.g. Tylenol) or some combination of them maybe with a bit of caffein.

But I have been having trouble with a tooth I let go too long before I took it the dentist (who is in a small countryside clinic and makes his rounds only couple times a week). He did a root canal but I'd already let it go so long -- just lazy and depending on pain medicine -- he scolded me for letting it get so rotten and hard to repair. He's been working on that tooth for over two months and only two of the three roots are filled, the other one keeps abscessing, a minor infection that is slow to heal.

Anyway, all that for two reasons -- one, to convince you to go to the dentist as soon as you can -- the other to tell you about naproxen sodium, an analgesic specifically for inflamed joints and toothache. It works better for me than ibuprophen or Tylenol, and here in Korea it is marketed under at least three brand names specifically for toothache. I did an internet search for possible side effects and I judged it OK for me. It's over-the-counter brand name is Aleve. It works more slowly than ibuprophen or Tylenol -- takes about an hour to kick in, but it allowed me to sleep when the other pain medications weren't quite strong enough. Note that I never take a higher dose of pain relievers than what's indicated.

Try swishing with warm salt water! I've got a nasty toothache right now and it's helping.

To sleep, I soaked two cotton balls in listerine and then put a very thin coat of oragel on them and put them in my cheek (gel side on the tooth).

You have to repeat this about every half hour until the pain subsides some. If that works, then you do indeed have an infection and you should see a dentist as soon as possible, as this is not a cure, just a reprieve. If you don't have an infection try flossing. I had a tooth ache the other day and after flossing I found it was due to a bit of food caught in between my teeth. I'm sorry for you I know how debilitating tooth ache pain can be. I had that problem for a very long time. Try ambusol, the numbing gel for your gums. Also, try liquid Advil, it worked right away for me. Then to help at night, tylenol pm or a generic brand to help you stay sleep; the pain will wake you up. Most importantly, get it seen right away, it will soon cause you to have headaches. See if there are any dental schools in your area that will have the students take care of you at a discounted price. Dont worry, they wont hurt you, actual dentists watch over them.

Another alternative, call 1-877-DENTRITE and see if they have any dentists that participate in this discounted dental program.

Umm the best thing to do, would be well I usally put some oragell on my tooth! that numbs it, and you don't feel that tooth until about maybe 1 hr. or maybe even longer, than while I have the oragell on there, I put a cold wash cloth on my cheek , on the side the tooth is on, and then that usally helps until the oragell wears off! :-)

I realize that while working 7 days a week you will have to take a day off but let me tell you that a toothache can be horrible pain and it will well be worth the day off to see a dentist who will x-ray and do whatever needs to be done to the tooth that is causing you the pain!! Reply:There are specific pain killers for tooth aches that you can buy in the store that you apply directly to your gums.
Reply:Buy some Clove oil as its really numbs the area that it is put on, also use Lavender oil around his temples as it gets rid of headache but alse soothes! Also, if he stops fussing over it and maybe goes for a lie down or watches something on TV it will take his mind off atleast a tiny-small-weeny bit of the pain!

If he still hurts, get him into a hot shower, as this will also help to alleviate his pain. He can just stand there %26amp; gargle with the hot water if he wants to %26amp; shower at the same time. You shouldn't be taking ibuprofen because it crosses the placenta. You should be taking tylenol or aceteminophen. It is the safest over the counter headache medicine during pregnancy. Only take two, no more. You can also take the night time tylenol, which should make you sleepy and might help you. Changing the type of medicine might help it work because after a while of taking the same thing, you body becomes immune. You can also try getting clove oil and putting it on your sore gums and teeth. Something else that helps me sometimes is to put Icy Hot on my face and neck and that will relieve the pain somewhat.

Reply:I am going through wisdom teeth problems too although I am not pregnant. If I were you I would go and see your doctor as taking any medication for a prolonged time is not good for you. I'm not sure what you can take when you are pregnant. Have you got the infants Bonjela gel for when they are teething? I used that and it works for a short time, also rub some rum on your gums. There is this pain that streches from my left far top molar to my ear. Today it was worse, because i didn't catch enough sleep last night and all day i've been struggling to keep awake in classes and there have been sharp pains in my head and the area described above. Reply:Yes, that's what I thought too, an abscess. If it throbs like crazy at night (!!!) and the pain is so bad you want to pull the tooth yourself right then and there it sure is one. There is often but not always some swelling with it. See your dentist and s/he will x-ray it and give you antibiotics. An abscess can kill you, so make sure you go to find out.

If it is just a bad tooth you need work done too.

rinse with warm salt water...also try "sloshing" around the tooth with equal parts benedryl and Maalox the benedryl will numb and the Maalox will help keep the benedryl in place...

Reply:Sorry, but eventually you are going to have to see a dentist. it would be dangerous not to. but to help with the pain until you find one - try these suggestions.

Buy some fresh whole cloves at the grocery - and prop one near the tooth and as you suck on it, it will dull the pain. Also if you can find some potters clay - either from a college art class or from the desert if you live in the southwest and wrap it all around the tooth and leave it there for about twenty minutes, every two hours or so.

The clay will draw out the infection and fluid and take some of the pressure off to give you a break from the pain and some time to find some help.

When you finally get the tooth removed, or fixed, call your state reps and tell them what a crappy situation you were in and run down the importance of med care in the united states before the next election.

Reply:First of all, DO NOT LISTEN to anyone telling you to get an over the counter quick fix! If you are in pain that means there's a problem and most likely an infection. Orajel WILL NOT fix it. If you let the tooth ache go - it will get worst. The worst it gets the more expensive it will be to get treatment. If there is an infection, it can spread and you will need antibiotics to treat it. What you can do is call the local colleges that have dental schooling. You can be seen by a "student dentist" and the cost is very very low. Many people without insurances go this route because it is affordable. Unfortunately, many dental offices do not offer payment plans because people just dont pay. There is a dental credit card called CARE CREDIT that many people without insurance use to get dental work they need. You can apply for care credit right online. They offer a year with no interest. If absolutely all else fails, I suggest contacting a local church and explaining. I know the dentist I work for does several charity cases for people in need. Maybe the church's know of a dentist that is willing to help. Another thing you can do is try putting a posting on craigslist to barter services. Maybe you can offer to clean the office of a dentist that is willing to help you or offer other services as payment. It may be hard to find a dentist willing to help but there are still people that care out there.If all else fails, go to the emergency room and get a perscription for the infection and call different dentists to get price quotes for how much an extraction costs. Reply:Whoa...applying heat to the tooth area is a really bad idea. The heat draws blood and that causes pressure in the infected area that in turn exacerbates the pain level. Use "COLD" packs. Make a quick run to the drug store and pick up a product called "Ora-Jel", it's an over the counter product that will do wonders for your sons pain. Then of course get the child to a dentist ASAP.

If it's a molar, you can stuff it with cotton to keep the air out. Brush the area really good, and rinse with warm salt water.

Get some cotton and roll it into a tiny ball and stuff the cavity area with it....you may need to use a toothpick or something to push the cotton inside.

Another good item are cloves. They have a numbing effect. You can put some clove oil on the cotton--it will help.

Another possible solution:

Onions. Take a piece of onion and put it on the side of the toothache. Pain should reside. If it comes back, bite down slightly on the onion to release the juices.

Sugar....that's an old wives tale.

Cavities deal more with genetics than anything else.

Tooth aches could be caused by cavities. However, there are other causes, as well. As someone has already mentioned, it could be tooth sensitivity, which could be hot, cold, spice, sweet, etc. One of the easiest ways to help that is to switch to a sensitive toothpaste, such as Sensodyne and get a toothbrush that has softer bristles. It's not how long or hard you brush. It's a matter of how many times and the way in which you brush. A lot of people think that circular motion is the best. It's not. Start at the top of the tooth, near the gum-line and in a steady motion, brush downwards. Flossing should be done in somewhat the same manner. Do not use a sawing back and forth motion. Pull the floss from the upper corner of the tooth downward and repeat on the other side. Also make sure to brush the tongue, gums, upper palate, and inside of the cheeks well.

If the sensitivity continues, make an appointment with your doc. He/she may be able to prescribe a paste or medication that works better than over-the-counter available products.

Reply:I think that would be clenching. Get a gel mold guard made for your teeth and wear it at night when you sleep. That's when you usually clench your teeth the most. Otherwise you'll wear down the enamel on your teeth and you'll never get that back. Your dentist should have made the best recomendation though?!

They do not offer any dental services in the ER. You would be lucky to get anything for pain, as they don't give out pain meds for something that is considered non emergent.

Reply:Don't know where you live. In Canada, you can get pain meds from the ER and if you are on Welfare they will pay for an extraction, but not repair of the tooth. Otherwise you're stuck. Many dentists do offer a payment plan and almost all work on a sliding scale, meaning you pay less if you don't have insurance or a lot of money. Call around for the best deal. Good luck.

id imagine you'll probably have to pay but i reckon if you explain your situation they'll have a look give you some kind of medical help, all part of human rights really as far as i can guess they'd be going against their code of practise to discard your pain as just a simple problem especially if you tell them its lasted for a prolonged amount of time.

though i will warn you, from personal experience .. a dentist will fix the tooth problem and try to keep the tooth best they can, a hospital.. will get a pair of surgical pliers give you some happy gas and pull the thing out.

Honestly, it's not going to be any cheaper to go to the ER. It's very, very expensive. Reply:Depending on were you live they can give you an injection to numb the area to give you enough time to get some pain killers on board and they can give you an antibiotic to help with the infection that is causing the pain. The antibiotic can buy you a little time to save some money to go to a dentist because the medicine won't "cure" the problem. There are clinic's in some area's that do emergency dental care and only charge based on your income.

Take this just before going for your tooth extraction, it will calm your nerves. They are human, and will be more than happy to explain things step by step. Reply:There's no reason to be scared. The only discomfort is the needle that is used for freezing and all it feels like is that someone is pinching the inside of your cheek.

You don't have to watch the needle. Just close your eyes and think of a sunny place and you'll be fine.

If you are feeling tense during the procedure, just try to take some deep breaths and relax.

If you are really scared, see if the dentist can give you some laughing gas before he/she starts. You will forget about all your cares. LOL!

Reply:Penicillin would only help if there was an infection. Try Ora-jel or Ambesol for temporary relief. However it's unlikely to get any better unless you've actually just got a sinus infection would can put pressure on you teeth. If that's the case it could be allergies and you might try an over the counter allergy medicine.
Reply:i know it sounds goofy but, try an over the counter sinus medication. it usually helps me. you really should see the dentist though. you can make payments. unattended tooth abscesses can lead to bigger problems.

Reply:Yeah these all work. Also can use cloves or clove oil. You might as well go to the dentist now instead of waiting until you are in such pain you can't stand it. Work out a payment plan with them. Just call and say you are having pain. They will usually get you worked in. You know it only gets worse. Many antibiotics besides penicillin. That isn't used much anymore anyway.

Reply:Ouch! Sorry to hear that. When an infection occurs in the mouth it is ESPECIALLY important to get attention immediately. Call your dentist and ask them to call in an Rx to your pharmacy for you. If they won't, or if you do not have a dentist, go to any dentist and ask them to send you a bill when you are checking out. They will. It is better to get a bill than to have a heart attack because you had a simple infection that could have been cured by a few pills. (I always have them bill me, even if I have all my payment paraphernalia with me!) Feel better and be well!
Reply:You should go to a doctor or a dentist right away - as you could have an abcess in your tooth and if that bursts you could end up with blood poisioning/septicemia which is often fatal if left untreated.

Until you can get to a dentist you can swish with Listerine and really focus on that tooth that hurts and after wards apply clove oil. The Listerine helps if you have infection gathering and it will minimize it. Clove oil helps with the pain. Good luck.

Sweetness activates the nerves going to your tooth and that's why eating chocolate can make your teeth hurt. Hot and cold things also can make your teeth hurt. I would recommend going to see a good dentist before your tooth gets worse and you need root canal-those really suck.

The other tooth may hurt because of referred pain. When one part of your body gets sensitized, it can make some other place in your body hurt. This often happens with teeth.

P.S. I love chocolate too!
Reply:Sugar feeds bacteria. Bacteria produce an acid which eats into your teeth. More sugar - more bacteria - more tooth eating acids - more tooth ache.

I know how you feel, i just had one of my teeth break yesterday and it hurt like heck....... i also do not have dental coverage so i have worried about this myself. What i have been advised by others is take tums for calcium and try to brush your teeth after you eat anything sweet, just try to take the best care possible of your teeth. But pregnancy does take a heck of a toll on your teeth!!
Reply:You should call your dentist and make an fast appointment with letting them know your situation. Most dentists will not remove a tooth when you are pregnant unless it is absolutely necessary. If you need a filling replaced they have things they can do even if you are pregnant.

Do not worry your baby will not be harmed but having your tooth problem fixed is important because if you wait the problem will get worse.

A general rule is you Can go to the dentist and have dental work done while pregnant, but it is not covered by medicaid.

When I was pregnant with my 3rd child I actually had a root canal done. It was ok'd through my Dr. and the dentist knew (though at 7 months it was hard not to notice!) The main thing is that they can't use epinephrine which is one of the medications they use during dental work.

As for payment you will have to cover it yourself unless you have another form of insurance. Some dentists take medicaid , but not many. I don't have any around where I live, so I had to foot the bill, we found something called care credit, lok it up online, however it took me 2 years to pay off that root canal.
Reply:Even though your pregnant you can take IB Profin. Just be careful with aspirin. Your tooth has nothing to do with your pregnancy and will not hurt the baby. It sounds like you broke your tooth and you better get to the dentist as soon as possible. If it gets infected, then the infection can travel down to the baby. Reply:If you are not allergic to ibuprofen or Tylenol start taking this immed. Take 6oomg Advil, then wait three hours and take 500mg of Tylenol. Alternate these two meds every three hours. If it becomes unbearable before you can get to your dentist go to the emergency room, they can give you stronger pain meds until you can see a dentist. Try warm compresses on the lower left if you can stand it. Don't suffer with the pain, go to the dentist and have this taken care of as soon as possible.

Anbesol might help. I have also broken a piece of aspirin and laid it on there. Someone once told me to swab whiskey on it with a q-tip, but I never tried that. See if you have a free dental clinic in your area. Most all cities have them now, where the dentist volunteer versus being paid. Reply:I hate to tell you this, cause I know that you already said finances are a problem right now, but this is not going to go away. You broke the tooth in half. If you broke your leg in half, the pain probably wouldn't just go away. A tooth is no different. If you can not afford to repair the tooth, if it is even repairable, then please get it pulled. You have an infection most likely. That is where the pain in coming from. A normal healthy tooth won't just break in half, so there was either a crack in the tooth already or a huge cavity.

Please don't believe the "place an aspirin in the tooth" story that someone may tell you. This is an ol' wives tale. Clove oil will sometimes help, but if there is an infection developing you need antibiotics.

You need to call your dentist immediately because you could have what is called "dry socket" and that is very painful. And he will give you more pain pills and whatever else you need for the pain and healing.

If you are not happy with your dentist, shop around a little bit. You'll probably find several other offices in your area that you will be happy with.

If your teeth are sensitive, it could be an indication of many things:

1. Grinding (are your teeth chipped, worn down, etc?)

2. de-mineralization (teeth whitening, cola-drinking, acid-reflux?)

3. natural sensitivity.

Ask a dentist you trust about MI-Paste. It is a topical milk protein based mineral supplement that replaces minerals lost in the enamel of your teeth. It tastes like yogurt. Dentists generally use this after bleaching procedures in the office to replace minerals and reduce sensitivity.

Reply:Take 800mg ibuprofen for the pain, and try either clove oil or whisky on the tooth that is hurting. Also try warm salt water mouth rinses regularly to help with the pain. You really need to see a dentist for the tooth that is causing you the toothache because it almost certainly has a large/deep cavity which will need to be fixed with a root canal or extracted. As for the problems with generalised sensitivity on your other teeth, try a toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth, like sensodyne.

In terms of your dentist being nasty and rough...well that sucks, but everyone has told you to change dentist - the reality is, you're not going to find another NHS dentist if you leave the one you're with, so you have to either put up with his nastiness once every six months, but get your treatment done cheaply, or decide you can't put up with his nastiness and be prepared to pay a LOT of money for a private dentist.

Personally, I'd stick with your current dentist, after all you only see him once every 6 months. I'm in the position of not having a dentist currently, can't find an NHS one to register me, so I'm going to have to go private, which I can't afford until I start working in September. So I'm putting up with problems until then.

Check out the way you brush your teeth. That can be damaging the gums and the enamel. When the gum line area around the tooth is exposed as a result of bad brushing, it becomes sensitive. There is corrosion of the gum line. Use sensodine. For cavities, use garlic and always rinse your mouth whilst brushing with warm water. Get a good dentist and have them x-ray your mouth. Get rid of bad decay and replace with inlays or bridges - if you can finance it. Stop the candies.
Reply:The best thing you can do yourself is to take 800mg of Ibuprofen which is prescription strength. It has an anti-inflammatory in it which will clam the nerve of your tooth so it is going to work better than Tylenol or aspirin. Do not use Ibuprofen for an extended period of time without being under the care of a doctor as it can be harmful to the stomach. Salt water rinses are wonderful for sore %26amp; irritated gums but it will not help a toothache. You really do need to see your dentist as soon as possible because it sounds like you have an infection and need an antibiotic. An infection in a tooth that is left untreated could very well land you in the hospital and could even potentially cause death.

Yes. In fact your toothache may be coming from the tonsils, and not the tooth itself. The tonsils are there to catch foreign bacteria and viruses. They can become infected and it can travel up your neck to be felt in your mouth.

I had my tonsils out, but if I get a bad cold I will feel my teeth ache because of the infection in my sinuses travel to the tooth nerves.

Go see a dentist or an oral surgeon. You could have any number of problems, the least of them being some sort of an infection in your jaw, TMJ-which is a problem with the joint in your jaw.

Reply:Depends on what's going on. I can say that rinsing with warm salt water, eat raw garlic (natural antibiotic) and also take ibuprofen which will help reduce the swelling.

Tell them you dont mind waiting and they will be more then likely to try and help you be seen but you may be waiting a while. But it's worth it. Good luck.
Reply:Campho-phenique (I believe that's how it's spelled!) works wonders for mouth ulcers, tooth aches, etc. It's only a couple of bucks at Wal-Mart, and lucky for you, it's open 24 hours! Hope it gets better!

Take ibuprofen if you can, 4 tabs @ 200 mg apiece every 4 to 6 hours won't hurt you for a few days, that's the prescription dose and ibu is excellent for toothache pain because it doesn't thin your blood (increasing circulation of any potential infection) PLUS it is an anti inflammatory. Do NOT take aspirin for pain, and lay off all stimulants until you are sure you don't have an infection.

You can also rub clove oil on the place where the pain seems to be radiating from, it will numb it. This, in place of anbesol or oragel if you are looking for a natural solution.

Avoid crunchy foods, sugary foods, extremely hot and cold, all aggravate a toothache. Do not stop brushing your teeth or flossing but be careful on the trouble spot because if you have knocked a filling loose there will be a jaggedy place somewhere that can catch floss and make a hook to pull more of it out or break your tooth.

I don't mean to insult your intelligence but sometimes sinus headaches and ear infections put pressure on the nerves in the teeth, this would be a real toothache but not a dental solution. It could also be that you have mistaken a toothache for one of these...when really if you think about it, your ears or sinuses hurt more.

If they suggest a root canal, and you have otherwise good teeth, go ahead and invest in it. Just know that sometimes a tooth isn't worth saving and root canals require a crown afterwards. Root canal isn't a horribly painful thing and it will save the tooth in circumstances where otherwise it would need to be pulled out.

Try calling these people. They do a lot of medical stuff for free. I don't know if there's one near you, but it never hurts to find out.

They're a non-profit community health center. I have a cousin that had a tooth pulled and says they are really good and he only paid around $20.

Take two amoxicillen three times daily for the first two day...then take one three times daily until you are left with 6 capsules. Take the last 6 six capsules like you did the first ones, in one day. It worked for me.

If the tooth is tender to tap then you probably 90% chance have a abscess.

If you have a hole in the tooth then you may have an abscess, both of which you will need antibiotics, your GP could give them to you, however this is just a temp me sure and you will need to see a dentist.

If you have generalised gum bleeding then you will have the beginnings of gum disease, flossing and warm salt water will help.
Reply:All the e.r will do is give u pain meds and antibiotics. You probably have an infection in the tooth, therefore you would need the antibiotics. Toothaches suck....Try taking advil for pain and swelling and since tomorrow is friday and the weekend will be here you need to call around to different dentist offices and let them know your situation and find out if anyone would help you out with a payment plan. good luck..

Bearing in mind that I'm neither a doctor nor a dentist, I'd have to say that yes, mouth pain could lead to back pain. Here's why- if you're experiencing chronic oral pain, you will, in general, be more tense. Emotional tension leads to physical tension, so back and neck pain could result.

Of course, the oral pain could just be a contributing factor- there could be more serious underlying medical conditions that lead to back/neck pain. You should book appointments with both your dentist and your primary care physician.

I'm afraid to say that theres not much advise that anyone can give you to fix your problem. You definately need to see your dentist, it shouldn't be hurting that bad after 3 days. Its either cracked, has some infection still in there or perhaps your filling stands out too much and when you bite it pushes your tooth in.

Take on aspirin (not ibuprofen) and hold it on that tooth until it dissolves. (I know YUCK!! but it works quickly) The aspirin as it dissolves goes directly to the area that needs is and works quickest.
Reply:go find some Ambesol or any other tooth ache medicine. A crushed aspirin with a couple of drops of water to make a paste will also work. Use a cotton swab to dab it onto the tooth. See a dentist asap, it may be an infected root, which will need anti-biotic.

Go to the Emergency room and get an antibiotic. The antibiotic will do you WAY more good than any other "remedy" until you can get into your dentist to have the situation resolved. If you plan on having the tooth extracted you also need to stop taking the aspirin for 24 hours prior to the extraction. Aspirin has a tendency to make you bleed which inhibits blood from clotting, end result a dry socket.
Reply:Cayenne Pepper for toothaches. After a few applications the capsacain will block the neural receptors and completely numb the mouth. I didn't even goto my dentist when my wisdom teeth came in because of this.

At first when she told me I figured it was her wisdom teeth coming out since she hasn't gotten them removed yet . I'm a little concerned though . she says her teeth hurt and sometimes she gets very bad headaches as well . I figure it's normal with wisdom teeth but she also says her jaw hurts , but when she shows me where it hurts she's showing me under her chin and pretty much the bottom of the jaw.

Is this normal for wisdom teeth? I remember only my teeth hurt when my wisdom teeth started to impact.

She made an appointment for the dentist but they only had time for next week . Can anyone tell me some things to do to ease the pain for her in the mean time?

Started 48 hours ago. Left side bottom teeth start hurting then top teeth. The pain is so bad!!!! Lasts for about 20 minutes at a time then goes away for an hour or so. Its just unreal...I've never had pain like this. Going to the dentist tomorrow so I'm beside myself in pain as I wait. Has anyone else had this? What was it and why does the pain come and go?

One of my molars gets sore usually in the evening and causes a little pain when I chew on it. I have notice that during the night I periodically clench or grind my teeth. Then I saw a commercial suggesting that may be causing my discomfort. Is this true or were they just trying to sell something? What else could it be?

Why this occasional tooth ache?
It could be clenching your teeth, or it could be problems with the molar itself. See your dentist and have an x-ray to determine if there is damage to the tooth or the root area.

There is a simple and inexpensive way to determine if your problem is due to grinding your teeth. Please note, this is not doctor approved, and should probably NOT be used long term. Go to your local Walmart or discount store and purchase an inexpensive mouth guard, used by football players. It should be very inexpensive (less than $1.00), and the ones I have seen are clear and rubbery/silicone material. Cut the center portion of the mouth guard into a piece about 1 1/2 inches long, using the center of the original mouth guard as the center for your "test" mouth guard. Place this portion of the mouth guard over your lower front 2-4 teeth. Bite down, gently at first, and your jaw teeth should no longer meet. Trim the mouth guard as necessary till you have a comfortable fit. It will be awkward at first, but you will get used to it quickly, and you will only have to wear it while you sleep.

If you are comfortable wearing a full size football mouth guard, that would also probably work. Many people find that the full size mouth guards will trigger the gag reflex, however, and your jaw teeth will still be able to meet, although there will be some protective material between them.

Possibly sinus pressure in the evenings, if you have sinus problems.

I had a molar capped and it was a little bit taller than the original was.

I caused a lot problems with the opposite molar, just because it kept putting pressure on it.

The doctor ground it down a little bit and i've never had problems with it since.

So, cronic clenching could produce the same symptoms.

Reply:Orajel makes a tooth pain jel for adults. You can use that but, then you need to get yourself to a dentist. You really don't want an abscess if you are breastfeeding.

Reply:try hot salty mouth rinses, especially if the tooth hasnt fully grown into the mouth and has skin still over it, 1 cup of water (as hot as you can handle without burning yourself) and tablespoon of salt. hold the mixture over the area until the heat goes, spit and repeat!. also chlorhexadine mouthrinses (talk to your chemist) are good but stain the teeth so dont use for too long!!.

Is the tooth a cavity or cracked or what? If it is a cavity they sell a clover wax that you can fill it with or a temporary filling that will stop air from hitting the tooth. the oil of clove is good too but hard to find and you usually have to call a pharmacist to find it but if it was my tooth I would be on the phone right now. they keep it behind the counter and it comes in a tiny little bottle and you put it on a q-tip and sponge it all around and in the tooth. It lasts for about 4 hours which is all Advil or ibuprofen is going to last too . The temporary fillings are at any pharmacy or good grocery store. I would hate being you until next week.

Reply:I've never tried this, but I have seen it suggested many places, so I have to believe that it works. Get whole cloves (spice section) and hold one between the tooth that hurts and the tooth above or below it.

One other thing that makes me believe that it does work is that the liquid that the dentist uses to numb the gum before injecting novocaine tastes like cloves.

its like a plasticine that you roll into a ball and put on the hole/filling etc that needs to be filled.

it sets hard and last about a fortnight before it comes loose.

costs about £5 and it works!

I had a filling put on my molar about a year ago and my dentist says that it was placed on a nerve so, I need to get a root canal. So, recently, it's been throbbing and now the pain is just constant. I've been taking my painkillers and just recently found that drinking soda really makes it feel better. Buut, I only have like one glass left of pop. Is there any remedy? I heard baking soda helps, but, thats also the same site where it says drinking urine is a great cure also! ;p

Go see your dentist as soon as you can because it is not good for you to have an infection like that. The nerve of the tooth is infected and you will need the root canal to remove the infected nerve. Reply:Petra, By now I hope you have been to the dentist, but if not here are a few "home remedies" that I have tried and they do provide temporary relief from the pain associated with the infectious swelling.

Clove is a great natural astringent and has antiseptic properties. Clove oil reduces the pain greatly and also fights against the germs in cavities and is an important ingredient in many toothpastes. (dentists apply a material containing clove oil as a vital ingredient when filling cavities)

Gargling with a warm salt water solution kills germs and bacteria in the mouth and throat.

Crushing garlic (to release the allicin) and placing it inside the mouth, next to the tooth does wonders.

Now using crushed Garlic may make your significant other not want to Kiss you (unless they are Italian ;)) I guarantee that it would taste better than that urine cure and it doesn't hurt like breaking your finger.

As a dentist i am always going to recommend seeing your regular dentist for ANY type of toothache. Your seemingly normal toothache is always a sure sign of more serious problems that will occur. Even a small cavity left untreated can eventually cuase an abscess which is not only one of the most painful situations, can be very life threatening and usually the only treatment options are extraction or root canal therapy. Until you can see your dentist, cold compresses always work very well and Motrin or Advil will work best to control pain and any inflammation. Hope this helps.

Can someone help me please?

I have the WORST toothache ever! I can't get into the dentist for 3 more days, I've been taking antibiotics but the toothache is still there. Help please! I'm ready to yank it out myself! I've been using the OTC products, they work for maybe 10 minutes, then its THROBBING again. This is this FIRST cavity I've ever had and I never, ever, want another one!

I've had BAD toothaches, and trust me when I say clove oil works. You can get it at a grocery store in the tootache section usually, but it's really strong, so you just need a tiny tiny drop on your tooth to help. Otherwise it will kind of burn your tongue (like a pepper would, not burn burn). Just put some on a Q-tip and rub it on the sensitive spot, I promise this helps. It might hurt worse for just a second, then it starts to go numb. It's worth a shot when nothing else helps though. Good luck, I know what kind of pain you're in. When I was pregnant and couldn't take pain pills, clove oil saved my life.

Reply:The dentist put you on an antibiotic but didn't give you anything for pain? What a jerk!

Depending on how old you are, and if you are over 100 lbs, you can take up to 600-800 mg of ibuprofen at a time but not long term. It might help take some of the pain away but what you really need is a really good pain med like Darvocet or Tylenol #3's.

Tooth pain is some of the worse pain there is. I just got over having a root canal done for the same reason and the Darvocet the dentist gave me barely took the edge off the pain the day before I was able to get in.

Reply:If you can feel or see a cavity, fill the hole tightly with dentac. It is sold in walmart near the floss and it works so well, my dentist thought I had another dentist do a temporary filling.
Reply:I use a gel called Dentek, it comes in a little pot (sorta like lip gloss stuff), and is pink. It's the only thing that works for my very stubborn teethaches. It lasts twice as long as Orajel, Ambisol, or the others.

Use a Q-tip to apply, and hold it on for a few seconds to let it sink in w/o your tongue or anything wiping it off, and it'll start to work w/in seconds, with full numbing in less then a minute.

You're experiencing hypersensitivity or pulpitis from the work done today, it sometimes takes a tooth a month or two to settle down completely just from being worked on, which most patients never notice. For the next few days try not to put anything too hot or cold on the new filling and let the tooth settle down a little. This should take care of the problem. The silver filling is not the same composition as your natural tooth, so they expand and contract at different ratios which places pressure on the tooth's structure which holds or encases the filling. Also this metal filling will get cold or hot and retain it much longer, and this metal is sitting closer to your pulp, which is the nerve that's being over stimulated and reacting by causing you pain. Just be careful for a few days with eating and drinking on it, if by then you are still uncomfortable call your dentist and let him evaluate the tooth. Perhaps the decay was too close to the nerve causing too much damage, this tooth may need a root canal to relieve the symptoms. You might want to let it settle down some, also use Advil or Motrin 600-800 mg for the next couple of days for inflammation and to help calm it down. Hope I've been of some help and good luck!
Reply:It's normal. Trust me, i know. The drilling and everything is a lot for a tooth to take,especially if the drill accidentally hits a nerve (OUCH!) and once the novocaine wears off, you start to feel the full extent of the damage (do you feel pain where you got the needle too? I usually do for a day or 2). It could hurt for a few days, but you could lessen the pain by rinsing your mouth with a water/hydrogen peroxide mixture or Listerine. Brushing with Sensidine toothpaste or using oral painkillers like Oragel or Ambesol could help too. Hope you feel better soon,though,'cause i know what that's like and it isn't fun.

If you have any antibiotics that were previously prescribed for YOU than you can take a larger dose of them to get the infection under control (that much pain is indicative of an abcess) and after 12 hours you ought to get relief from that. Call a pharmacist to get proper dosage info. Other than that start taking ibuprofen and don't skip, take regularly as indicated. Oh, also ice, ice, ice. Take a bag of frozen peas (sounds weird, but...) and use it 20 minutes on, 20 min off for the rest of the evening. Keep ypur blood pressure down also, there is a live artery in there and if you get amped up it will hurt more, just lie around. Hope you feel better!!

Reply:Ok. You need to see a dentist ASAP. Ring your dentist and listen to the message that is left during out of hours. Many have an emergency service out of hours so you could get in tonight for some pain relief.

Reply:Soak some cotton wool in either whisky or vinegar and press onto the hurting tooth and area... Bite on it hard and remove... Usually works for me... Both taste disgusting though! (IMO) ;)
Reply:try rubbing it with whisky or brandy and taking paracetemol not more than 2 tablets. bad for your liver (liver poisoning)

if you are in uk, your hospital may have an emergency dentist at your E AND R hospital. if you can possibly get there , give them a ring first.
Reply:Take some ibuprofen. That is meant to be the best analgesic for toothache.
Reply:Take a paracetamol and an ibroprofen together and that really works. If you have mouth wash use that to numb it and get rid of any germs. Hope this helps.

Reply:Call yr Dental surgery they will have emergency out of hours number. Alternatively, if there is a hole in the tooth crush some paracetamol (1 should do) and push it into the hole with some cotton wool to act as a cap. This will need to be removed before you go to sleep though. Hope it helps.
Reply:So sorry to hear about your pain. I have had trouble with my teeth for years, but I remember at one time I had terrible toothache and for some unknown reason I stuffed my handkerchief in my mouth and just bit into it - the pain was almost instantly relieved. That's one way.

But if you live in the UK you can get emergency help 24 hours a day.
Reply:You can get stuff from the chemist which you apply directly to your tooth . Helps loads. If not open get some ibuprofen from the store. This can be taken at the same time as paracetamol to help ease the pain. Your local out of hour health service can provide emergency dental treatment.
Reply:Ibuprofen AND a paracetamol type painkiller - I had this last year. For me it was an infection and I had to take antibiotics, but not the ones you usually get from the doctor, different ones for anaerobic bacteria (something -zidamol?)
Reply:i had a hole in my front tooth which was infected the only thing that took the pain off until i got to the dentist was whiskey ..just swill some into the tooth that hurts then spit it out
Reply:As well as taking painkillers I put a hot water bottle against my face through a towel and this dfoes help a bit, but ultimately the only thing that will help is a dentist, see if they have an out of hours service for such bad pain or go the local casualty and tell them they might have something better for the pain.

First of all, I went to the dentist last week which prior I hadn't been in about 6 years. I found out that I had two cavities. I had one filled. He grinded on the other, I thought that he filled the cavity but it is extremely painfull and sensitve five days later. What should I do, if anything?

Well if you can get it. Viscous lidocaine really works. But the old remedy still works, grind up asprin and put it on said tooth.

BUT, go back to your dentist ASAP
Reply:maybe get some mouth numb stuff...are you sure you dont have TMJ...its when u lock ur jaw or you crush you teeth together at night while you sleep and it irritates your mouth and causes damage to your teeth and is VERY painful...(it runs in my family)

but if you think its not that then i would say get another dentist apoinment to a different dentist and see what they say but for the time being get some mouth numb gel.

Drink straight cranberry juice - 8 - 12 ounces (preferably on an empty stomach). It kills infections. That's what I do for toothaches, other infections, fevers..... (Warming it takes a lot of the sour out. Plug your nose %26amp; chug! It's not so bad! ... honest!) CJ is available at health food stores and most grocery stores. Do not use fruit blends or "cocktails" to kill infections.)

P.S. Repeat dose if required. One dose usually knocks mine out (quickly!).

Reply:to relieve the pain get a teabag and put it in hot water...get the tea bag as hot as you can stand it and put it on the tooth that hurts and bit down (not hard just bite) leave it there till it is cold it will relieve pain and the tea leaves will draw out the abscess of the infected tooth.
Reply:Press the muscle among your thumb and forefinger. Find a point there which is more pain then other when pressed.

Press that point hardly in both of you hands, it can recude tooth ache.
Reply:If I found myself in a town with no insurance in a strange town. I would go to a bar on the dark side of town, not a sports bar or gentlemen's club. But a bar next to a welding shop or something where ordinary folks go. Then I would ask the bartender which one of his patron's has reasonably good teeth. Then I would find this person and ask him who his dentist is. Chances are it isn't Dr. Rich (no offense). I would ask this person if he likes his dentist. I would repeat as necessary until I finally found the person who wont shut up about how great and gentle their dentist is. Ask for the name and go to that office. I would pay cash and probably get a big discount and get better attention as the person who reffered me has such a big mouth, the dentist dare not risk the chance of bad PR.

Don't know. Seems to work from my side.

lately i have been having problems with one of my molars i am 14 and it has been chipped for some time and has never given me any problems. it only ever seems to be caused when i have a day were i eat alot of sugary things. and it will then typically hurt for 24/48 hours. its is not severe but it is enough that it puts me in relative dicomfort and gives me trouble sleeping some times. i am going to go and see a dentist but in about a months time is it worth waiting or getting an appointment earlier than this thanks matt

You need to see the dentist ASAP. The tooth has decay and that is why it is bothering you. The tooth is giving you a warning. If it is left untreated then the decay will continue to get larger and it will go into the nerve of the tooth which will cause major pain and swelling. Then the only treatment would be to have a root canal done to remove the infected nerve or have the tooth extracted.
Reply:Matt, since you chipped it i would say try to get a appointment right away. You never know what kind of damage that could have done. And even tho it hurts from time to time, its better to catch something before it starts, then when its really bad off. Just go make an appointment asap, and go make sure that everything is ok. Its worth knowing
