I'm pregnant and i have a bad tooth ache?
It is safe and even desirable to go ahead and take care of dental problems while pregnant. Untreated tooth or gum infections have been associated with low-birth weight and prematurity.
Use local anesthesia, no gas, and afterwords it is safe to take Tylenol, just no more than 4000mg within a 24 hour period. (That is 2 extra-strength every 6 hours.) If you need something stronger there are several choices since you are already 7 months - Tylenol 3 is commonly prescribed - it is a Category C medication for pregnancy. Your dentist can always call your OB or midwife, OR (and this is the best choice) a pharmacist. A pharmacist is the real expert when it comes to drugs and any possible side effects or warnings, and most have it all on computer now, at their fingertips. You probably won't need very strong medication after the first 12 - 24 hours.
Good luck!
* Dental problems, including toothache and bleeding gums are NOT a normal part of pregnancy! There is no change in body chemistry that would cause these problems.
Reply:Tylenol wouldnt hurt your baby.
Not sure if itll work on your tooth though.
Reply:try tylenol extra strength, but ask your doctor first,it will help.you can also try acupressure.if your tooth ache is the right side ,take your right hand and between your index finger and your thumb,go inch down from V and put ice on that spot ,on back of hand.good luck.
p.s. if it's your left side ,use left hand.
Reply:i know that my dentist did a root canal on me when i was pregnant so i would imagine that they could pull your tooth because they use novicane on your gums to numb them when they pull your teeth which should not affect the baby at all the only thing that they will give you for pain (most likely) is tylenol
Reply:i would have paracetamol only, if you need anything more than that i would consult your gp or midwife.
Reply:While I was pregnant they pulled 2 wisdom teeth. They have to use local anesthetic instead of gas. The gas can kill the baby. For pain after words I was prescribed Hydrocodine. Your OB can give you a list of all the dos and dont's when it comes to the dentist. Plus my Dentist required what I could and couldn't have from my OB before he would do anything. OUCH I know how you feel and good luck!
Reply:I am 4 months pregnant and recently went to the dentist. I'm told most routine practices are safe during pregnancy, you'll just want to avoid an x-ray. As for afterwards... my doc says Tylonol is ok for pain, but nothing else. I would try to delay the procedure until after the baby is born, if at all possible.
Reply:Do not take any over the counter medication. Call your obstetrician and then go see your dentist. Toothaches and gum disease, especially tender and bleeding gums, are common during pregnancy due to the change in body chemistry.
Reply:Getting dental work done when you are pregnant is fine. Just let your dentist know that you are pregnant. Taking care of your mouth when you are pregnant is one of the best things you can do. If you have an infection, or tooth pain, it can cause problems with your pregnancy. It can cause low birth weight, premature birth, development problems in the baby, contractions and premature labor. It is recommended that you visit the dentist at least once during your pregnancy anyway. Get that tooth looked at!! It will be the best thing you can do right now for your baby.
