18 weeks pregnant with a tooth ache..(are x-rays ok)?

I have a dentist appointment next week for a cleaning. Over the past couple of days my tooth has been hurting. I'm thinking i have a cavity. If i do they will probley have to do an xray to find out if its a cavity or not and then they will have to fill the cavity..and of course us a local numbing medicine to do so. Is the xray and medicine they use to numb you safe during pregnancy. Has anyone who's been pregnant ever had to have a xray done or dental work done?

Nope, no x-rays or dental work being done. It sucks, I got my FIRST ever cavity while I was pregnant with my first, and nothing could be done about it until after she was born.

It's common, though, to have toothaches and sensitive teeth while you're pregnant (make sure your dentist knows you're pregnant!).
Reply:My dentist will not do any x-rays at all with women who are pregnant it is too risky ... but it all depends on the dentist I would take precautions.... Good Luck
Reply:NO!!!!!!!!!!!! let them know asap that you are pregnant.....and when you are pregnant you cannot have any tooth pulled ask your obgyn
Reply:I havent but was told x-rays are not safe. Let your denist know that your pregent. I do not know what he'll do but its the best thing for you to do.
Reply:Most dentists will not do x-rays on pregnant women because it can cause harm to their baby. You need to let your dentist know you are pregnant before starting the appointment.
Reply:They wont do one, he will probe you to find the cavity
Reply:my dentist doesnt allow it...even if u do where that vest. I say dont..

"Dental X-Rays During Pregnancy

It is safe to have x-rays when you're pregnant, just make sure to tell your dentist when you go to the office. Ask to wear a lead apron over your abdomen and pelvis. "--from the first link I provided.

It's not only safe to have that cavity treated--including x-rays if necessary--it's also recommended.

Letting that cavity go could lead to infections that could end your pregnancy.

I had a filling break when I was 16 weeks along. My dentist required a note from my Ob, saying I was in good enough health to have treatment. The dental assistants double-wrapped me in lead aprons for the x-ray and I received 2 injections of Lidocaine without epinephrine. Everything turned out fine. My tooth was capped and my baby boy was born 3 days past due, completely healthy.
Reply:your dentist is going to have to revisit the dark ages, lol, and find your cavity with good old fashioned detective work.

One of the very first things my ob told me when i went for my first appointment once i was pregnant was to have my yearly exam with my dentist, if needed, asap.

there are many studies that show that dental and gum health can affect your pregnancy.. so don't leave the tooth hurting but skip the xrays!
Reply:I just went in 2 days ago, because I had a tooth that was bothering me. The dentist said I had to talk to my OB before he would do any drilling, numbing, xrays, etc. He did say that they are able to use a numbing type medicine that does not have epanephrine (spelling??) in it. He said chemical will speed up the babys heart to a dangerous level.

Basically, I dont want to put my baby thru any undue stress, so I am going to suck up the tooth ake until baby is here in June.

  1. Yes, that's right, Epinephrine and X-rays can cause harm to the baby inside your womb. That's why it is apt to immediately inform the dentist if you are pregnant so that s/he can take some precautionary measures during your treatment.
