Hit in the mouth...is it normal for tooth to ache without needing special treatment?

I was attacked by a dog yesterday, who jumped at my mouth and hit me directly in my front tooth (ouch!) The tooth was numb at first, but does not seem to be loose and looks healthy, so I haven't contacted my dentist. It does still ache when I touch it. Is this normal following an impact like this? Will it subside without needing to see a dentist? Thanks!

The ache is from the bruise. I would say that it will subside in a day or so. If it continues or gets worse after that, call and get it x-rayed to make sure you don't have a fractured root.
Reply:I would always recommend that you see the dentist. The pain that you feel may be from trauma to the root of your tooth and even if the pain goes away it does not mean that there is not still a problem. The root could die or there may be bleeding under your tissues that you can't see. If you choose to not see your dentist and the pain goes away, take an ice cube and touch it for a short time to your tooth, if you feel pain you know that the tooth is alive.
Reply:Give it a couple weeks, you probably traumatized the tissue (intrusion) around the tooth. It may be a little hot/cold sensitive and to chewing. It should resolve slowly if the tooth has no other problems. If it gets worse or gets very sensitive to temperature I'd see a dentist. Take it easy on it.
Reply:As long as the tooth is tight, it should be OK. BUT, watch for signs of infection. continuous pain, redness, swelling, There may be a small cut that you don't even see. If the pain continues or other s/s occur, call you dentist immediately. THE AREA MAY BE SENSITIVE FOR A FEW DAYS, BUT BEYOND THAT, YOU NEED TO SEE THE DENTIST.
Reply:It is normal for your tooth to be sore. You should see your dentist and have him take an xray of the tooth to make sure you have not done any damage to the root of the tooth. Sometimes when a tooth goes through trauma like that the nerve of the tooth will die so you would then need to have a root canal done. If the pain gets worse or your tooth starts to turn grey then you know that it is time to have a root canal done. Good Luck and I hope that your tooth starts to feel better soon.
