Tooth ache after filling drilled cavity?

My doctor prescribed me ibuprofen (pain killing) and antibiotics and I have an appointment scheduled next week. He says the cavity was pretty deep and I may have to have my nerves pulled out if my tooth still ached next week (root canal therapy or pulpotomy..i think that’s what it’s called). What are the chances I won’t heal by then because I’d rather take the pain every day rather than not feel anything with my teeth for the rest of my life. What else can I do?

thanks

If you had a really large cavity/ filling, it is totally normal to have sensitivity or pain, mild to moderate depending. That could take WEEKS to subside. Talk to your Dentist. ( chew on the other side- avoid severe temperatures .

As for "not feeling anything with your teeth"- well, that's silly. Your "feeling" pain now and it sucks.

Dr does a root canal ( pulpotomy for baby teeth), removes, hollows the inside more than the cavity drilling originally, the decayed sick little root. Doc will clean your tooth really good then packs it with and preps your tooth for a crown.

You keep your tooth and all the feeling of having a tooth stays with you. They add strength to weakened or worn teeth. Better than a filling sometimes.

Try not to be too worried, ask your Dr questions, that's why they went to school.

Also!!!

Know this.. depending on your insurance ( presuming that you have it)- if the root canal therapy is beyond the scope of the your general/family dentist, a difficult root structure, etc. you can be referred to a Specialist, and Endodontist. That's what they do best.

Either way, talk to them, don't suffer- there's no need. Expect sensitivity with your teeth after any dental work is performed. Also may I suggest using Sensodyne toothpaste when you brush.

My teeth are ULTRA sensitive.. nearly all of them and that makes a world of difference.

Best of luck!!
Reply:If the filling was that deep then you will need to have the root canal done because the filling is pressing on the nerve which is why you are having so much pain. The pain will not go away without treatment. The only other option that you have is to have the tooth extracted if you do not want to have the root canal. It is best that you have the root canal done because the nerve will continue to bother you which can cause major swelling and that is not good for your body to have an infection like that. Having a root canal does not mean that your tooth will feel numb for the rest of your life. You will never even know that the nerve of the tooth is gone other than the fact that you will not be in pain anymore. Saving the tooth with having the root canal is the best option for the tooth. If you choose to have the tooth extracted then your other teeth will shift and move because you will have a space for the teeth to move into. This will cause your teeth to not align properly.
