Why do people say they have a tooth ache when their teeth can't feel?

shouldn't they say gum ache seeing how your gums hurt from being irritated by your teeth?

No, the gums aren't part of the nerve. And actually your teeth can feel. The outer enamel can't, but the next layer, the dentine, can. That's why when people have real bad tooth decay they feel pain when they eat or drink something hot or cold, the dentine is very sensitive to temperature and air. The nerve is also a cause for tooth aches, not gums aches.





Teeth do not irritate gums, plaque and calculus irritate the gums.





So toothaches and gums are two completely different things.
