I am 7wks pregnant with a severe tooth ache. My dentist said he would like me to get through the first trimester befor he does anything. In the mean time I have been taking tylenol for pain. do you think that is ok? Doc says yes, but have any of you ever had dental work while pregnant? And do you think tylenol is safe?
Tooth ache and just pregnant?
Tylenol is considered safe during pregnancy. Advil is also considered safe during the first two trimesters, but not as safe as tylenol.
It is *better* have dental work done during the second trimester. For some reasont there are less risks. Obviously in the first trimester all of the organs are forming so there is a greater risk of medications and whatnot causing defects. Also there is a greater chance it will cause a miscarriage. Though I want to be very clear, those risks are VERY small.
During the third trimester dental work, and more specifically the chance it will introduce bacteria into the blood stream can cause premature labour.
Try to make it to the second trimester if you can. Try using cloves to reduce the pain. You can simmer 5-15 cloves in one cup of oil for 15-30 minutes (I can't be precise but you won't overdose... if you were doing this for a baby as I do I do 3 cloves for about a half hour). As an adult you can use clove oil (essential oil) but I wouldn't recommend it during pregnancy.
You can also use temporarly fillings. It sounds like your dentist really knows his stuff, but it wouldn't hurt to check the anesthetics beforehand and you may wish to discuss a course of antibiotics starting 24-48 hours before your dental treatment with your doc/OB/midwife. You can check the safety of medications either on the FDA site ( www.fda.gov ), Mother risk ( www.motherrisk.org ) and ither places of course.
Reply:Ask your Dr.It may not be good to take something that thins your blood.
Reply:O work in a dental office, if you are in pain, get a note from your OB. Take the note to the dentist. They can work on you while you are pregnant. X-rays they double the shield on your abdomen. Medication they give you has to be approved by your OB. Emergency care for a toothache is important when you are pregnant, they will not usually do elective work (fillings, bleaching) but they want you to keep up on cleanings to prevent problems. (Some anestheics with epinepherine is not recommended because it can speed up the baby's heart rate, but they have anesthetic without). Tylenol does not thin your blood, aspirin does, tylenol is safe during pregnancy.
It is better to have work taken care of instead of causing stress on your baby.
Reply:Don't Know About Going To The Dentist...But Tylenol is safe to take...and near the end of your pregnancy try using Tylenol PM for the nights when you are so big you can't get comfy enough to go to sleep!!
Reply:Tylenol is fine but do not take more then what the directions say. Call your OB and get his / her recommendations for the dental work. I worked in OB/GYN and when a patient went to the dentist, that dentists office called our office to get the ok from us to do dental work.
Reply:It is safer for the baby to have dental work done during the 2nd semester. Personally, I have never had dental work done during pregnancy, but one of my friends did have a tooth pulled while pregnant; however, b/c of the meds they give you, it is much safer during the 2nd trimester.
Tylenol is safe to take while pregnant; never take aspirin or ibuprofen b/c that can thin the blood which will cause excess bleeding during labor.
Of course you should always talk to your OB before doing anything.
Reply:First of all, Tylenol doesn't thin your blood, it is aspirin free, but should still be taken only when you really need it. I had a tooth break apart a few weeks ago, I was 15 wks pregnant at the time, my dentist made me wait another week so that I would be all the way into my second trimester. He still didn't give me an x-ray when he fixed my tooth. But if I were to have a problem with my teeth when I was in my first trimester, that required x-rays and medication for pain, I would have waited, no matter how much it hurt me, I wouldn't want to risk it. Of course I have a history of miscarriages, so I am a little on the cautious side.
Cleaning is very important though, bacteria and infections can harm your baby.
Reply:I went to the dentist with severe pain in my right jaw when I was just 8 weeks. He told me the same thing as your dentist told you. I had to take tylenol until i was 14 weeks. He then was able to do a local anesthetic and he actually pulle 4 of my teeth. He didn't really explain why it was better to wait, but I trusted him and everything went just fine. My baby is now born, and I was pain free for the rest of my pregnancy. I hated the pain, but wanted to do what was best for my baby as well. My OB doctor told me that tylenol was the only pain reliever I was allowed to take. After the teeth extractions, I was put on a pain killer that had tylenol as the main ingrediant, so apparently it isn't bad. Good luck.
